What we can do to face the competition between human and the new AI technology?

At the World Internet of things Exposition (WIOT) in Wuxi, east China’s Jiangsu Province, on September 10th, 2017, Jack Ma, founder and chairman of China’s e-commerce giant Alibaba, said that the world cannot be separated from the internet or from the big data. In the not too distant future, the internet of things (IoT) and artificial intelligence will lead humans into the real big data era.

(Jack Ma, speaking at the 2017 WIOT)

Based on Alibaba’s exploration of the IoT, cloud computing and artificial intelligence in Jiangsu province from 2009, Jack Ma pointed out that humans have stepped into the DT (Data Technology) with information sharing from the IT (Information Technology) with information monopoly.

Mentioning the competition that may appear between human and machine, Jack said that in the next 20 to 30 years, the machine will show us a very powerful force, making a huge impact on humans. But that does not mean that the competition between people and machines will be horrible. What people should do is not to worry that humans will be defeated by machines, but be self-confident and learn to keep the balance between them.

Jack also predicted that there would be a large number of new manufacturing industries emerging in the next 10 to 15 years, which will be “Made in Internet”, to replace the ones “Made in China”.

When talking about social developments in the future, he admitted that “The things I worry about most are the education reforms in the future”. Every time when change happens, it is followed by educational changes. If China wants to be the front-runner, our nation and our society should pay high attention to the new industries in the coming 30 years, and take them as reference to adjust our university courses as well as primary and secondary school curriculums. This is the way for us to have people be skilled and educated, and prepared for the coming new era. It is also the way to help us keep the balance between the human development and the development needs of society.”

“When we are focusing on the chances led by the new technology like machine learning and AI,” he encouraged the audience to “pay attention to the challenges resulting from the new technology. To make the most of the chances, it is a good idea to figure out the methods to face the challenges, rather than stopping the new things which cause the challenges. To keep human development continuing, we must use those new technologies to support our society and serve humanity and to help reduce the poverty gap between people.”
